SimpliSafe is incredibly flexible when it comes to mounting the components. The SimpliSafe Keypad is no exception. In fact, you don’t even have to mount it.
This is one of a series of articles on mounting SimpliSafe components. We will also cover topics such as mounting the SimpliSafe SimpliCam and SimpliSafe entry sensors.
SimpliSafe Keypad Installation
Technically, the SimpliSafe Keypad does not need to be mounted. Since it’s battery operated, the keypad is fully portable. This comes in handy when setting up new devices or perhaps would like to take it with you from room to room.
Most will opt to mount the SimpliSafe Keypad. Here’s how to do that.
A SimpliSafe Keypad has two parts. Separate the mounting bracket from the keypad by pulling it off the back. I find it easier to work with when the keypad is not attached.
Note the presence of four 3M Command Strips. Nice part about this tape is that according to 3M, it’s made to stick to walls and can be removed without damage. From personal experience, I can confirm that.
Peel off the wax backing to the strips, then line up the mounting plate. Use a level to ensure it is straight. The keypad is on the large side so if it’s mounted on a slight angle, you will likely notice it. It’s worth the extra minute to use the level.
Once you get it straight, press firmly on all four areas where the tape appears. SimpliSafe suggests 30 seconds. I would then let it sit without the keypad for at least 30 minutes. After the time has passed, reattach the keypad.
The SimpliSafe Keypad also includes a set of mounting screws that can be optionally used. I find the included adhesive strips do not stick as well to flat versus glossy paint. For added security, use the screws. However, remember, unlike the 3M strips, you will put holes in the wall. There are four mounting holes on the back of the mounting plate that can be used.
All done.
SimpliSafe Entry Sensor Installation Challenges
There are a few challenges that are worth mentioning.
First is the importance of final placement selection. Make sure this is where you really want it. Removing the keypad when using the adhesive strips should be done very slowly and it’s unlikely that you can reuse the adhesive strips.
The SimpliSafe Keypad uses 3M Command Strip Adhesive Tape to adhere to a flat surface. Additional strips are available for purchase and they aren’t expensive.
Another option, for those wanting an even more secure fit is to consider a roll of 3M VHB Tape. VHB is an acronym for Very High Bond. This is permanent and difficult to remove. Be sure you want to opt for this type of adhesive as it will likely pull your paint off when it is removed.
If replacing the tape with either option, be sure to first remove all old tape remnants from the mounting plate. Be sure to apply at least 30 seconds of pressure when applying the new tape and then 30-seconds again when adhering it to the flat surface. Then let it sit at least 30 minutes before attaching the keypad.
