Phone, GPS and Tablet Mounts for an Audi RS 5

The Audi RS 5 will go down as one of the more challenging vehicles to mount a phone, GPS or tablet within.  That big display popping up in the middle of the console makes it very difficult to come up with a lot of good spots.

The Audi RS 5 Challenge

We previously evaluated mounts for an Audi Q3.  That was a bit of a challenge given the smaller vehicle size but the Audi Q8 made was much easier.  The Audi RS 5 was the most difficult by far.

Our typical interior photo of the vehicle accompanies this article.  The large console can be seen near the top of the photo.  This negates the windshield as a good mounting location.  The display will get in the way of that.  This also nullifies the top of the dash as a suitable mounting location.

Some Mount Recommendations for an Audi RS 5

The best place to mount a phone within the Audi RS 5 is probably the air vents.  The large horizontal vents make it easy to attach the Square Jellyfish Jelly-Grip Car Air Vent Mount.  The mount features a ball and socket design so the cradle be maneuvered for the best angle.  The included cradle opens to 3 5/8 inches which is large enough for almost any phone.

For those that prefer their Garmin GPS, the Square Jellyfish Jelly-Grip mount can also be used.  All Garmin vehicle GPS units made over the past ten years include a custom cradle that has a 17mm socket on the back.  Remove the cradle from the Jelly-Grip mount and you have a 17mm ball.  Now snap the Garmin cradle onto the Jelly-Grip 17mm ball and your GPS can be mounted to the air vent.

We reviewed the Square Jellyfish mount in detail in 2016 and have used it in a few vehicles successfully.  It’s a solid mount that holds up very well to daily use.

A pair of cup holders are located directly in front of the dash.  A cup holder mount with an adjustable arm can be deployed in the passenger cup holder.  This can work well for applications that do not need to be referenced while driving (aka GPS apps).

Consider the Arkon Car Cup Holder Phone and Midsize Tablet Mount.  Adjust the 3-inch arm to tilt forward at the base to position the device away from the dash.  The adjustable cradle opens wide enough to accommodate most phones with or without a case or skin.  The cradle can also accommodate small to midsize tablets.

The last location to consider on the Audi RS 5 is the CD player.  The CD player is located in a good place for mounting a phone or GPS.  Probably not a tablet.  Consider the Mpow CD Slot Mount for SmartPhones.  Be sure to follow the included instructions for a secure fit.  The included cradle opens to 3.4 inches to fit practically any phone and swivels into portrait or landscape.

So we were able to find a few good locations for mounts in an Audi RS 5.  The air vent and CD player seem best.  The cup holder can be used in a pinch.  Negative to the windshield and dash.
