The Subaru Legacy is a nice midsize vehicle. Looks like a fairly basic mounting experience but there are a few challenges to be aware of.
We previously looked at a number of different Subaru vehicle mounting challenges on our site. Subaru interiors are generally mount friendly. The Subaru Legacy falls into the mount friendly category.
Mount Analysis
A photo of the interior of a Subaru Legacy accompanies this article. There are a few things that stand out. The big giant speaker in the middle makes a dash mount difficult. Nice sized horizontal vents makes a great spot for a phone or GPS. The cup holder is a bit too close to the passenger and gear shift to be very useful. The CD player is in a nice spot for a mount.
The most popular location for mounting a phone or GPS continues to be the windshield so let’s start with those mounts. The Subaru Legacy windshield isn’t overly sloped and practically any mount should work fine.
Mount Recommendations for the Subaru Legacy
Consider the Arkon MegaGrip Suction Cup Windshield and Dash Mount. It’s a well made mount that features a vacuum locking suction assembly attached to an adjustable base. An expandable holder opens to 3.4 inches and will fit practically any size phone. The device swivels into any orientation. This is a very reliable mount which comes with a two-year warranty.
The same mount but for a Garmin GPS is the Arkon Windshield Dash Garmin Nuvi Suction Mount. We have recommended this for many years. It’s an excellent mount that comes with a 2-year warranty. It’s more rugged and longer than the mount Garmin provides in the box with the GPS. The mount has a 17mm ball which snaps into the hole on the back of the GPS cradle that came with your Garmin device. This mount will fit all the Garmin vehicular GPS devices that use the 17mm ball including Nuvi, Drive, DriveLuxe and DriveAssist.
This mount includes a dash disk to turn the mount into one for the dashboard. Due to the large Dash speaker, it’s going to be difficult to effectively position this mount on the dash, so you will likely not use that option.
Thanks to standard horizontal vents, we have another good phone or GPS mounting spot. Consider the Andobil Air Vent Mount. This mount can be used to hold most phone models with or without a case. The ball and socket design facilitates a 360 degree rotation. The included cradle opens to accommodate phones up to 3.75 inches wide. The mount uses a unique locking clip to securely attach to horizontal and vertical vents.
The Andobil Air Vent Mount can also be used for a Garmin GPS. All Garmin vehicle GPS devices made over the past ten years include a custom cradle that has a 17mm socket on the back. Remove the cradle from the Andobil mount and you have a 17mm ball. Just snap the Garmin cradle onto the mount minus the cradle and your GPS can be mounted to the air vent.
We took a deep dive into the Andobil car air vent mount awhile back and liked it a lot.
The CD player is located just above the console display. Consider the Apps2Car CD Slot Mount uses a knob on the bottom to secure the mount within the CD player. I prefer this mount to others in this category as it will permit a more custom and secure fitting. You don’t want the mount to rattle around inside the player. The cradle opens to almost 4 inches which is wide enough for most phones and many GPS devices.
How about a tablet mount? It’s going to be difficult in the Subaru Legacy. It’s a smaller vehicle and the vent, windshield and CD player aren’t usually good places for a CD player, especially in a smaller vehicle.
Mount Summary
So to sum it up, a windshield, vent or CD player mount should work fine in a Subaru Legacy. Avoid the dash and cup holder mounting locations.
