RAM Mounts are known for being incredibly durable, stable, and versatile. But there’s one downside that doesn’t get talked about enough:
They’re easy to remove if left unsecured.
Because RAM systems use tool-free adjustment knobs, a standard setup can be loosened and removed in seconds. That’s great for usability — not so great for security. It takes a few seconds for a thief to turn the knob counter-clockwise and walk off not only with the mount, but whatever is attached.
Now most riders will take their phones with them, they may not remember to take an expensive Garmin Zumo GPS. It’s an expensive lesson and while you can’t make it impossible to take, you can make it difficult. That’s where these solutions come into play.
The good news is you don’t need to replace your mount to fix this. With a few smart upgrades, you can make your setup significantly harder to steal.

Start with a Secure Base (Most Important Step)
Before adding any locking accessories, take a look at how your mount is attached.
If the base can be removed easily, nothing else will matter.
The most secure setups use:
- Flat surface bases bolted into a dash, console, or panel
- U-bolt handlebar mounts that require tools to remove
- AMPS pattern mounts secured with hardware like torx-head screws
Less secure options include suction cups, adhesive mounts, and clamp-style mounts. These are convenient, but they’re also very easy to remove.
Upgrade to a Locking Knob (Best Overall Solution)
The easiest and most effective upgrade is replacing the standard RAM knob with a locking version.
This type of knob includes a keyed lock that prevents the arm from being loosened without the key.
- Direct replacement for standard RAM knobs
- Prevents disassembly of the arm
- Works with most 1″ B-size RAM systems
Once installed, the knob will spin freely if someone tries to loosen it without the key, making it extremely difficult to remove your mount.
Use a Security Knob (Best Tamper Resistent Solution)
This is another easy upgrade that replaces the current knob with a 2-piece solution. One part replaces the flywheeel. The second acts as a tightening nut. Once the the flywheeel replacement is tight, remove the tightening nut.
The resulting assembly cannot be removed without the tightening nut.
- Can buy mutiple security knobs in case you lose the unlocking nut
- Prevents disassembly of the arm without possessing the 5-pin unlocking knob
- Works with 1″ B-size RAM systems
Alternative: Universal Security Knob Solution
If you’re using a mixed mounting setup or want a non-RAM option, there are universal security knobs available that serve a similar purpose.
These typically use a specialized key or tool pattern to prevent unauthorized removal.
- Compatible with a range of mounting systems
- Lowest cost
- Effective against casual tampering
While not as secure as a keyed locking knob, this is still a strong upgrade over a standard hand-tightened setup.
What These Upgrades Actually Protect
It’s important to understand what you’re securing.
- These solutions protect the mount system
- They do not protect the device itself
If you’re mounting a phone, GPS, or tablet, you should still remove the device when leaving your vehicle or motorcycle unattended.
Where Security Matters Most
These upgrades are especially important in:
- Motorcycle setups parked in public areas
- Marine environments where mounts stay exposed
- Vehicles with visible dash or windshield mounts
If your mount is easy to see, it’s worth securing.

Bottom Line
RAM Mounts are built to last — but without security upgrades, they’re easy to remove.
Start with a solid base, then upgrade to a locking knob to prevent tampering. It’s a simple change that can save you from replacing your entire setup.
And remember — even the most secure mount won’t protect your device. Always remove it when you’re away.
