Phone Mounts for a Tesla Model X

Tesla Model X MountsThe Tesla Model X is the high-end SUV from the Tesla brand.  State of the art electronics all over.  But I’m fairly certain it won’t replace your phone, hence this article about phone mounts for a Tesla Model X.

Mount Analysis

A photo of the interior of the Tesla Model X accompanies this article.  Complete with yoke!

You may have noticed that we left the word “tablet” out of the title for this article.  There’s simply nowhere to place a tablet in the Tesla Model X.  It’s simply too compact in the front seat area.  Perhaps in the back seat for the passengers using a seat mount, but not in the front.  If interested in rear seat mounts for a tablet be sure to check our article on that topic.

Like the Tesla Model S, the Model X has a gigantic 17″ touchscreen display.  It’s the largest touchscreen front seat display I have ever seen in a vehicle.  You will likely use this display for a lot of things, but it sure provides a large GPS display.  Can’t see anyone using a Garmin GPS instead of this.

So let’s look at some mounts for a Tesla Model X.

Windshield and Dash Mounts for the Tesla Model X

The windshield is a top location for mounting a phone in a Tesla Model X.  A bit of a far reach so consider the iOttie Easy One Touch 5 Car Mount. This mount has an extendable base and features an expandable cradle.  Unlike most other mounts, the iOttie Easy One Touch 5 has an 8-inch extension feature.  The included cradle expands by simultaneously pressing the buttons on each side.  This should be large enough to hold most phones.

The top of the dash towards the left of the touchscreen is another useful location for mounting a smartphone.  We have a good way to use the suction mount we just mentioned on the dash.

Add the iOttie Reusable Dashboard Pad to the configuration.  It’s a temporary non adhesive dash pad.  The bottom has a sticky surface and the top is smooth like, well, a windshield.  Be sure to clean the dash area before application.  Next, stick the suction cup from the mount to the smooth surface on the dash pad.  When it’s time to remove the dash pad, just lift the tab and remove.  Wash the bottom with warm soapy water and let it dry.  This recharges the sticky surface.

Other Mounts for the Tesla Model X

An entire line of mounts unique to Tesla have come to market over the past few years.  Attachment to the display tablet or somewhere close to it seems to be a theme.

Take the Torras Magnetic Car Mount for Tesla Vehicles as an example.  This is a mount that uses a magnet to connect to your phone.  It can utilize the MagSafe connection on an iPhone or other phones supporting this connection.  This attaches to the back of the Tesla Model S display screen.  This mount features the ability to fold it behind the display when not in use which is nice.

Mount Summary

Other mounting locations in the Tesla Model X aren’t going to work.  The cup holders are set too far back to be useful as a mounting location.  There is no CD player.  The car seat bolts aren’t easily accessible.  The vents aren’t traditional vents so forget about that location.

So we recommend the windshield and display as the best locations for mounting a phone or GPS.  The cup holders, seat bolt and non-existent CD player are poor choices.
