Mounting a phone, tablet or GPS in any pickup truck is infinitely easier than almost any other vehicle. The Nissan Frontier is no exception to that rule.
Like other pickup trucks, the Nissan Frontier has a spacious interior. Most locations are fine. There are a few exceptions.
Nice big windshield will work well for a phone or GPS. The large horizontal vents make an excellent location for most devices. Nicely placed cup holder are going to work well for a small or midsize tablet. a big dash makes for a good place too The absence of a CD player means no mounts for that location.
Windshield and Vent Mounts for a Nissan Frontier
The Square Jellyfish Jelly-Grip Car Air Vent Mount is one that we have recommended before. The Square Jellyfish Jelly-Grip mount can be used to hold most phone models with or without a case or skin. It has a ball and socket so the cradle swivels into any orientation. This mount will work on flat vent slats that are 3/8 to 1 inch deep. The included cradle opens to 3 5/8 inches which is fairly large.
The Square Jellyfish Jelly-Grip mount can also be used for a Garmin GPS. All Garmin vehicle GPS devices made over the past ten years include a custom cradle that has a 17mm socket on the back. Remove the cradle from the Jelly-Grip mount and you have a 17mm ball. Just snap the Garmin cradle onto the Jelly-Grip mount minus the cradle and your GPS can be mounted to the air vent.
We wrote a full review of the Square Jellyfish mount awhile back and it’s worth reading for more information.
The good old windshield mount will work in a Nissan Frontier. The problem is that it’s a much further reach from the driver’s seat. For someone over six feet tall, that’s probably not an issue. But for a shorter person, it’s going to be a long reach.
Given the longer reach, we want a mount that has some length to it but not so much that it’s hitting the driver in the head.
The iOttie Easy One Touch 2 Car Mount for SmartPhones provides an extendable rigid base combined with an expandable cradle. Unlike many similar mounts, the iOttie Easy One Touch 2 has a two-inch extension feature. This extension is a welcome feature in the big Nissan Pathfinder interior. The included cradle expands to 3.2 inches by pressing the buttons on each side. This is large enough to hold most phones. For example, the Apple iPhone 6s Plus is 3.07 inches wide so this cradle will fit just fine as long as there is no thick case or skin.
The previously mentioned iOttie Easy One Touch 2 mount can utilize a dash disk to turn this into a useful dashboard mount.
Cup Holder Mounts for a Nissan Frontier
The Nissan Frontier has a pair of cup holders in the middle. They are set back a bit and would make a good location for a small or midsize tablet. This is a location for using apps that don’t need to be looked at while driving. So not for a GPS app but ok for music.
Consider the iKross Cup Holder Mount for Tablets and Phones. This mount includes two different cradles. One for a phone and another for a tablet. The mount is adjustable and solidly made to easily handle the weight of your tablet. You will see a lot of mounts on the market for tablets or cell phones. This is the only car mount kit known of that offers two different cradles, one for the phone, the other for the tablet. The tablet cradle will hold devices from 7 to 10.2 inches. To reiterate, this is good for apps that don’t need to be referenced while driving. Not good for a GPS app for example.
So in summary, the Nissan Frontier supports many traditional mounting locations including the windshield, vent, dash and cup holder. However, the CD player isn’t there any longer so no mounts for this location.
