Fat Gecko Camera Mounts: The Mother of all Camera Mounts

Awhile back, I discovered the Fat Gecko Camera Mount with Triple Suction Cups.  I call these the mother of all camera mounts because it’s an extremely heavy duty camera mount.  Heaviest I have seen to date.  Let’s take a look at what impressed me about Fat Gecko Camera Mounts.

Fat Gecko Camera Mounts are made by a company called Delkin.  I was already familiar with Delkin because I remember buying some memory cards a long time ago for a GPS that were manufactured by Delkin.  I didn’t know they were in the mount business until I discovered Fat Gecko Camera Mounts.

The most important aspect of a camera mount is stability.  While some of the newer cameras have image stability features built into the camera, most do not.  That means your video or image will only be as good as the stability of the mount.  A mount which shakes even a little will result in a fuzzy video.

What makes Fat Gecko Camera Mounts the mother of all camera mounts?  Let’s look at how these differ from others I typically run across.

Fat Gecko Camera Mounts come in a variety of configurations.  The bottom of these mounts have from one to three suction cups.  The mount that we’re concentrating on with this article is the one that’s in the photo that accompanies this article.  There are three suction cups at the bottom.  This contributes to an extremely stable video.

These three-inch suction cups will attach to any non porous smooth surface.  The manufacturer has tested this mount on glass, plastic, helmets, boats, surfboards and counter tops.  Delkin even tested these mounts attached to the exterior of vehicles going over 150 mph.  While I’m not endorsing the latter, it’s interesting to know they have tested this mount in such an extreme environment.

The mount is made of anodized zinc and there are six adjustment points to provide a lot of flexibility in terms of being able to get the proper angle.  These adjustment points are secured by turning the flywheel at each location.

The tip of all the Fat Gecko Camera Mounts have the universal 1/4″ – 20 threaded camera adapter.  This is the same adapter that is found on any tripod and common to almost all cameras.  GoPro cameras outside their weatherproof case have that common thread pattern.  If using a GoPro within the weatherproof case, there are inexpensive adapters available and sold separately to allow them to fit the 1/4″ – 20 threaded mounting pattern.

Once attached to the Fat Gecko Camera Mount, the camera can swivel 360 degrees.  Since the tip is built upon a ball and socket concept, the camera can be pivoted into virtually any angle.

The Fat Gecko Camera Mount is capable of holding up to twelve pounds.  That’s a lot of camera.  The mount measures 7 x 8 x 9” (17.78 x 20.32 x 22.86 cm.) and weighs in at 2 pounds.  There’s a rubber washer at the base of the camera adapter to protect the bottom of the camera.

Here are some tips in using Fat Gecko Camera Mounts.  These are suction cup mounts.  Good suction cup adhesion requires a clean flat surface.  Clean the surface with some Windex or any alcohol based cleaner prior to use and dry thoroughly.  Be sure to test the adhesion prior to use by pulling slightly on the mount to ensure all three suction cups are properly adhered.  These mounts are made to adhere to non porous surfaces such as glass and metal. They will not adhere well to porous surfaces such as a textured dash or materials like wood, concrete or vinyl.

The manufacturer provides a two-year warranty on the Fat Gecko Camera Mount with Triple Suction Cups.  While you may not ever need to take advantage of this, it’s nice to find a company that backs their product with a warranty that goes beyond typical shorter warranty periods.
