There are millions of old Garmin GPS mounts sitting unused—and many of them are actually perfect for mounting a GoPro or similar action camera.

Instead of buying a new mount, you can reuse your existing Garmin mount with a simple adapter. The key is understanding the 17mm ball system used on most Garmin Nuvi and Drive mounts.

Quick answer: if your Garmin mount has a 17mm ball, you can attach a GoPro using a 17mm-to-GoPro adapter or a 17mm-to-tripod adapter.

Why This Works

Most Garmin Nuvi and Drive mounts use a 17mm ball joint. Originally, this ball connects to a Garmin cradle—but that cradle can easily be replaced.

Once you remove the original GPS holder, you can attach an adapter that converts the 17mm ball into a GoPro-compatible mount.

Big advantage: you’re reusing a mount that’s already designed for vehicle stability

Two Ways to Mount a GoPro

1. Using the GoPro Case (Most Common)

The easiest method is mounting the GoPro while it’s inside its protective housing. The case uses the standard GoPro prong mount system.

This setup is ideal because it adds protection and is the most secure way to mount your camera in a vehicle.

Best Adapter for GoPro Case

This adapter connects directly to the 17mm ball and provides a GoPro-style mounting interface.

Best for: mounting GoPro with protective housing

Once installed, simply use the GoPro thumbscrew to secure the camera to the adapter.

2. Using the Camera Without the Case

If you prefer a smaller setup, you can mount the GoPro directly using the built-in tripod thread on the camera.

This requires a different adapter that converts the 17mm ball into a standard 1/4″-20 screw mount.

Best Adapter for Direct Mounting

Best for: compact setups without the GoPro housing

This setup is lighter and more compact, but offers less protection for the camera.

Best Garmin Mounts to Use

Not all Garmin mounts are equally useful for this setup. These work best:

  • Bean bag mounts: extremely stable, no installation required (the old 010-10908-00 mount)
  • Suction mounts: great for windshield positioning
  • Dash-mounted bases: permanent and solid

If you already own one of these, you’re in great shape.

Adjusting the Camera

Once everything is connected, adjustment is simple. Loosen the ring on the 17mm mount, position the camera, and tighten it back down.

This gives you full control over tilt, rotation, and viewing angle.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Using the wrong ball size (must be 17mm)
  • Skipping the tightening ring (leads to movement)
  • Mounting without the case in high-impact environments
  • Using weak or worn-out suction mounts

Bottom Line

Old Garmin mounts are far more versatile than most people realize. With the right adapter, they can easily be converted into stable, adjustable mounts for a GoPro or other action cameras.

If you already have a Garmin mount, upgrading it is faster, cheaper, and often more stable than buying a new camera mount.
