Garmin Nuvi Car Air Vent Mount Product Spotlight

The Garmin Nuvi series has been around for many years.  Ironically, the Garmin Nuvi Car Air Vent Mount was only recently introduced.  This was a real lost opportunity as several well known manufacturers sold thousands, perhaps millions of vent mounts at the expense of Garmin.  A real lost opportunity. The air vent is one of my favorite mounting locations.  I like it because it keeps the device near your line of site where it’s easy to see.  I also like the fact that it keeps your device out of clear site of any potential bad guys.  A vent mount is not … Read more

How to Prevent GPS Theft

So we’re eating dinner at a local restaurant on Route 46 in Northern New Jersey.  We leave after a 90 minutes meal to find a bunch of glass all over the parking lot.  I look at my car to find the passenger window smashed, my GPS stolen and the glove box all over the floor of the car.  I remember walking into the restaurant and several people from the kitchen staff were outside smoking and checking us out.  This is New Jersey and that’s the way the state rolls so I didn’t think anything about it at the time.  When … Read more

Lots of New TomTom GPS Models, Not a Lot of Mounting Options

Where do we start?  TomTom has introduced so many new GPS units over the past six months.  We have difficulty keeping up with customer inquiries on new models.  As usual, this company makes a nice GPS. Roughly 10 models of the TomTom Via series, another ten for the TomTom GO.  And to add some additional confusion, the model numbers seem to overlap the TomTom XXL series (prompting a few to buy the wrong model accessories) TomTom continues to be a prominent player in the GPS market.  Features are market leading and keep track fairly well with Garmin (the other market … Read more

Magnetic Metal Surface Mounts for Tablets and Phones

Today we discuss how to stick a phone or tablet to a metal surface.  There are a lot of instances where metal surface mounts come in handy.  Think about stuff made of metal.  A refrigerator door, work bench, file cabinet, even the side of a stationary car (key word is stationary, I don’t like to use these mounts on the outside of a moving vehicle). There are a few ways to attach your phone or tablet to a metal surface.  The most obvious way is to use a mount that has an adhesive bottom but that isn’t ideal since it’s … Read more

Magnetic GPS Mounts

The mount industry has finally warmed up to magnetic mounts.  We first wrote about magnetic mounts a few years ago and we were puzzled why there weren’t a bunch available.  The only ones that we knew of back then were from a company in Italy who charged quite a bit for these versus where the prices were for the non magnetic models.  We were big fans of magnetic mounts because of the ease in installing and removing your device from your car.  There’s nothing easier.  Well since we first discovered our first magnetic mount, things have changed and the industry has … Read more

Using a GPS in California or Minnesota

What do the states of Minnesota and California have in common?  Tick tick tick tick… Give up?  Up until fairly recently, it was illegal to put a GPS on your windshield in those states.  Imagine buying a new GPS with the suction mount and getting pulled over a few days later for using the mount in the box.  We got all kinds of stories from people after their wallet was $100 lighter and sold a lot of vent, cup holder and dash mounts as a result.  Fortunately, these two holdouts have now joined the rest of the country in permitting attachment … Read more
