Hydrific DropletIf you can mount it, we write an article about it.  That’s been our thing for a long time.  So today we’re going to discuss how to mount a Hydrific Droplet Smart Home Water Sensor.

This is a great device for tracking water usage in your home.  The usage includes leak detection as the accompanying app will identify abnormal usage patterns.  Notifications are pushed to your phone.  Unfortunately, as of the date of this article (January 2026), messaging and email is not supported.  Only push notifications.  Android and iOS are supported.

The Droplet, from Hydrific, clamps onto your home’s main water pipe to monitor flow, detect leaks, and track usage via an app. For some, mounting a Droplet water detector is a straightforward DIY process that takes about 5-10 minutes and requires no tools or plumbing expertise.  This all depends upon your water main location and length of available water main pipe that is available for the mounting process.

What’s in the Droplet Box

The package includes the sensor device, a 5-foot USB-C power cable, and an AC wall adapter. Many may find the short length to be insufficient because not everyone has an electrical outlet nearby.  The USB-C cable could be replaced with a longer one, or the AC wall adapter could be plugged into a standard extension cord.

Preparation Steps

Create a Droplet account in the app using email, Apple, Google, or Facebook logon credentials.  Ensure the password meets requirements (8+ characters with uppercase, lowercase, and special).

The app asks a lot of setup questions.  Establish your home profile with address, housing type (single-family, apartment), household size, and the number of fixtures like showers or toilets. Locate your main water shutoff valve.  This is typically in the basement, garage, crawlspace, or utility closet; ensure no fixtures run during the installation or the calibration will be incorrect.

Finding the Ideal Spot for the Droplet

Select a straight, clean section of the main water pipe right after the shutoff valve—no bends, fittings, paint, or rust. Droplet fits pipes from ½” to 1-¼” which covers most residential sizes.  In rare cases this can be a challenge.  Be sure there is about 6 inches of straight uninterrupted pipe.  The key is for those white contacts to touch the pipe.

Like most smart home devices, Droplet only attaches to 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz is not supported.

And, don’t forget the power outlet to plug it into.

Powering and Mounting the Droplet

Plug the USB-C cable into Droplet and the adapter into an outlet; the light blinks orange. Slide Droplet onto the pipe, aligning the white ultrasonic sensors flat against it. Turn the blue knob clockwise to tighten—the light shifts to solid orange (keep tightening), then solid blue for perfect fit. If orange persists, loosen, wipe the pipe clean, and retry for optimal contact.

This can be a challenge as the alignment is critical.  Those contacts must be touching the pipe.  Try to find as long of a length of pipe as possible.  No bends or washers can get in the way.

Pairing and Testing

In the app, pair via Bluetooth (stay close because Bluetooth range is limited); select your Droplet and connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Automatic pipe detection follows (it takes up to 2 minutes, light blinks orange-blue-orange).

Run a flow test by flushing a toilet and the app confirms detection with a green checkmark. Calibration completes in 48 hours for accurate leak alerts and usage insights.

Benefits of a Properly Mounted Droplet Plus Alternatives

Correct installation enables real-time leak detection (as low as 0.026 gallons/minute), AI-powered usage breakdowns, and bill savings. One device covers your entire system, and can potentially save the owner from a huge bill when it alerts you to unexpected water usage.

The benefits of this device is that it can track your water usage so it can detect a running toilet or when a faucet is left on.  We have covered a few other options that can detect leaks once they get wet.  This includes the Honeywell Water Leak Detector and Simplisafe Water Sensor.
