Mounts for the Garmin Striker 7 Fishfinder

Two Garmin Striker 7 models were recently introduced to fill the mid-tier market.  When I compare the Garmin Striker 7 to what one would purchase a few years ago, there are a slew of improvements in mapping features, color display and transducers. There are two models for this series.  From a pure mounting perspective, the Garmin Striker 7sv and Striker 7cv are the same.  Any mount that fits one model, will fit the other. Installation typically requires use of two cables.  One for power.  The second for a transducer.  It’s worth noting that the transducer is included with the Garmin Striker 7sv and Striker 7cv. … Read more

Mounts for Garmin Aera 795 796 GPS

The Garmin Aera 795 and Garmin Aera 796 were released earlier this year for aviation use.  These are great units that feature 3D Vision technology which shows a virtual 3-D behind-the-aircraft perspective of surrounding terrain derived from GPS and the pre-loaded terrain database.  It’s touchscreen so simply slide your finger across the screen to rotate the view and show land and water features, obstacles, runways and airport signposts in relative proximity to the aircraft.  That’s just one of the many neat features of this GPS line. This article isn’t about the Aera.  It’s about the mounts so let’s get started with that discussion. … Read more

EDOTech Hardwire Cable for Garmin GPS Devices Review

EDOTech offers a good option for those wanting to hardwire their GPS to their vehicle.  The EDO Tech Hardwire Cable for Garmin GPS Devices fits almost all car GPS devices made by Garmin including the Garmin Nuvi and Garmin Drive product lines.  Although these are marketed towards Garmin GPS owners, these also fit most TomTom and Magellan GPS models made over the past several years.  As long as they use a mini USB, this should provide power to your GPS device.  These are made to work on car GPS devices, not one that are made for motorcycles such as the Garmin Zumo … Read more

Garmin Hardwire Power Cable Product Overview

I always like to use original equipment whenever possible.  For hardwiring purposes, the Garmin Hardwire Power Cable is what is used for almost all their GPS devices that use a mini USB ending.  It’s manufactured by Garmin for their brand of GPS devices. There are a lot of reasons for wanting to hardwire your GPS to your vehicle.  Most popular is for attachment to a motorcycle as most do not have an accessory outlet.  Other popular hardwire locations are cars and boats.  Attachment is straightforward.  When not in use, the cable tucks neatly into a motorcycle saddlebag or under a … Read more

Garmin BC 30 Wireless Backup Camera

The Garmin BC 30 Wireless Backup Camera can be added to many of their latest Nuvi and Dezl GPS units.  The backup camera is an excellent addition for vehicles that do not have one already installed or for trailers that do not likely have a backup camera.  While certainly not a substitute for turning your head to check for oncoming vehicles, a backup camera is useful for backing into spaces to ensure you will not hit the object behind you.  The backup camera integrates with the GPS device and leverages the display that’s used for a GPS.  If you hook it … Read more

Garmin Portable Friction Car Mount Product Review

The Garmin Portable Friction Car Mount was introduced roughly 5 years ago.  The part number for this mount is 010-11280-02.  You will also see some older models listed as part number 010-11280-00.  This mount is made to be compatible with all Garmin Nuvi GPS models.  The mount requires the cradle that came with your GPS.  That cradle is likely still attached to your suction cup mount.  Removal of the cradle is a simple matter of pulling it off the suction mount.  Like the suction mount, the Garmin Portable Friction Mount has a 17mm ball which is standard to all Garmin Nuvi … Read more
