The Samsung S9 and Samsung S9+ are the top dogs in the world of Samsung. At least for a few months. It’s a complete redesign from other models, and that means the size changed. We’re going to look at car and motorcycle mounts for the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+.
Let’s look at the important dimensions to keep in mind when selecting the right mounts. The Samsung Galaxy S9 checks in with a 5.8 inch diagonal screen and measures 5.81 x 2.70 x 0.33 inches (147.7 x 68.7 x 8.5 mm). The Samsung Galaxy S9+ cost more so not surprisingly it’s even larger. Sporting an extremely large 6.2 inch diagonal screen and measuring 6.22 x 2.91 x 0.33 inches (158.1 x 73.8 x 8.5 mm). Hopefully you’ve deployed a case on the phone, so be sure to add to these dimensions to account for the case.
You used to be able to purchase custom mounts for phones but that’s rarely possible these days. Makes sense. Most people will add a case, and you probably aren’t going to keep the phone more than a few years. That’s where our recommendations for universal cradle mounts come from. Hopefully it’s something that you can redeploy with your next phone. We strongly recommend a good case. These are expensive phones, adding a case will save you from a cracked display and a very expensive repair. We reviewed the Otterbox Defender for a previous version of this line of phones. They’re great cases and worth consideration for the Samsung Galaxy S9 or S9+.
There are a wide variety of locations to place a Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ in the car. The windshield is the most popular location to mount any phone especially if you plan to use it as a GPS with our favorite application which is Waze.
These are large phones so we’re going to need a big expandable cradle to hold it. Consider the Arkon Slim Grip Ultra Travel Mount for both of these models The cradle opens to over seven-inches which is large enough to hold either phone with or without a case (including a big thick Otterbox Defender). It has an expandable cradle with legs that can be moved from side to side to leave any port on your phone exposed for cables. The mount can be adjusted at the base and cradle and rotates 360 degrees.
The inclusion of an adhesive dash disk with this mount will turn this into a dash mount. This is excellent for states that may not allow mounting to a windshield. We wrote a detailed article on this topic which can be read here. This dash disk is included with the Arkon Slim Grip Ultra Travel Mount at no additional charge.
Another popular location for most smartphones is the car air vent. One of our favorites continues to be the Square Jellyfish Jelly-Grip Car Air Vent Mount. The Square Jellyfish Jelly-Grip will hold the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ with or without a case. It has a ball and socket so the cradle swivels into any orientation. This mount will work on flat vent slats that are 3/8 to 1 inch deep. The included cradle opens to 3 5/8 inches which gives us plenty of room on the sides.
A CD player mount is going to work just fine with the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+. Consider the Mpow CD Slot Mount for SmartPhones which uses a knob on the bottom to secure within the CD player. The cradle opens to 3.4 inches which is wide enough for both models. This is the mount featured in the photo that accompanies this article. The ball and socket design features a 17mm ball so you can remove the cradle and just use it for a Garmin GPS.
On a motorcycle, you need an expandable cradle to hold your Samsung Galaxy S9 or S9+ very tightly so that it tolerate the vibrations. Ideally, you also want a tether as an added measure of safety. We have recommended the RAM X-Grip line for quite a while on the motorcycle and continue to do so whenever possible. We wrote about X-Grips extensively on this site and you can view that article here.
Consider the RAM X-Grip IV Handlebar Mount for both the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ . These mounts feature the expandable X-Grip IV cradle which can open to 4.5 inches. A complimentary tether is included with these mounts, so be sure to use it. The metal u-bolt gits handlebar diameters up to 1.25 inches. The three-inch metal arm attaches to a ball on both sides meaning you have two points of adjustment for your phone.
