The Garmin Edge 1000 is one of the best cycling GPS units available. Unlike other cycling GPS units, the Edge 1000 features an extra large 3.0″ diagonal display. Similar to Garmin motorcycle line, the Edge 1000 has a glove-friendly, touchscreen display that adjusts automatically for low-light areas, such as shade and tunnels. This means that the screen does not require human touch and that gloves can be worn while using the unit. The Edge 1000 supports Smart Notifications which will allow you to see your text, email and call notifications from your Bluetooth connected smartphone while riding. The Edge 1000 is made for cyclists and contains the best cycling roads with pre-loaded maps and points of interest. In the box you will find the GPS with pre-loaded maps, a handlebar mount, USB cable, tether and a manual.
The actual GPS measures 2.3″ x 4.4″ x 0.8″ (5.8 x 11.2 x 2.0 cm). There are a lot of good mounts made by Garmin and some universal ones made by some good mount companies that will allow you to use this GPS almost anywhere.
The Edge comes bundled with the Garmin Extended Out-Front Mount. This mount attaches to your handlebar and is extended so to permit the rider to see the GPS easier. This mount uses an included hex key for attachment and includes rubber pads to prevent marring of chrome handlebars. The back of the Edge 1000 has a custom adapter on the back to allow secure attachment to this mount. Attachment of the Edge 1000 to the mount is a matter of lining up the notches and turning to lock on.
The Garmin Quarter-Turn Stem Mount Kit is ideal and inexpensive for attachment to your stem, or possible the handlebar. This mount comes with a series of rubber bands that wrap around the bike stem. Like the Extended Out-Front Mount, this mount includes the custom Edge 1000 attachment. Like the last mount, attachment of the Edge 1000 to the mount is a matter of lining up the notches and turning to lock on.
For those looking for a simpler universal mount, the Arkon RoadVise Bike Strap Mount will fit the Edge 1000 real well. This mount has a few advantages not found in the Garmin Edge 1000 specific mounts. This is a universal mount that fits a lot of devices. The Garmin Edge 1000 is one of them. Another is a smartphone. So this mount can be used to hold your Edge 1000 and when you feel like riding with your smartphone, the same mount can be used. This mount also includes a strap mount that is made to be easily installed and removed. No tools, and simple to remove the mount or just the device. Don’t worry about the gripping power of these RoadVise mounts as they are also used on heavy vibration environments like motorcycles.
There are a few nice accessories to consider along with the Edge 1000. My favorite is the Garmin Edge Remote Control. Although the Garmin Edge, coupled with these mounts, sits at a nice location on the bike, it’s sometimes inconvenient to interact with the unit. The Edge Remote Control allows control of your Edge 1000 GPS without removing your hands from the handlebar. The 3-button remote connects wireless to the Edge 1000 to mark laps and scroll through pages. You can program the third button of the remote from a preset list of functions.
You can also attach the Garmin Heartrate Monitor to the Edge 1000. This monitor is worn around your chest while cycling. It transmits your heart rate to the Garmin Edge 1000 wirelessly. The fabric strap portion can be removed from the heart rate monitor and hand-washed as often as needed.
