Mattress Mounts aka a Bed Frame

Zinus Compack 9-Leg Support Bed Frame, QueenWe have a lot of articles on this site.  Some are about traditional mounts, some are not traditional mounts, at least not in terms of holding an electronic device.  This is one of the latter types of articles.

I was recently faced with the task of replacing the bed in one of our guest bedrooms.  I wanted to do all of this online.  Less stress and hopefully a better price.  I quickly found that you can easily buy a high quality mattress set online, but it turned out that the most challenging part of the buying experience was purchasing a mattress mount, commonly known as a bed frame.  I did so much research on this, that it seemed a shame not to document the process and pass it on.  That’s where this article comes in.

The first thing you need to decide before purchasing a bed frame is what type of mattress you are buying.  Like I said that was the easy part for me.  If you are going to purchase a memory foam mattress, realize that when you sit on the side of the bed, there’s little to no support, as you do not use a foundation with these.  A memory foam mattress needs a platform, not a traditional bed frame.  The platform can have a flat board as the support or a series of supports.  I didn’t need that as I was buying a traditional mattress and foundation set.

So it turns out there are a lot of box springs available.  I checked out the least expensive ones.  The ones that are a frame with no middle support.  Some have wheels and others have 4-6 legs.  Avoid all of these because many fail due to insufficient support.  While you may think that having wheels under your bed makes it easier to move, in reality, it doesn’t provide as much support as a series of legs.  Also, and this is important, you need a middle support bar.  Those without a middle support bar leave nothing in the middle to support you and the mattress set.  Bottom line, you need a support bar in the middle and lots of legs.  No wheels.

The photo that accompanies this article is the one that I settled on and there it is put together in the guest bedroom.  It’s the Zinus Compack 9-Leg Support Bed Frame.  This brand is apparently made by a company called Sleep Innovations.  I chose this because it has nine support legs, a support bar in the middle and a 1200 pound weight limit.  That’s enough to support a large family.  It took about an hour to assemble and attach to the headboard.  The instructions that came with it were a series of drawings, no text, and that made it a bit more challenging but it wasn’t a horrible experience.  The most difficult part was attaching it to my headboard.  Screws to attach it to the headboard are not included so I figured that I could use the old ones.  I was wrong because the slots on the new bed frame were smaller than the ones on my old one and didn’t fit.  A quick trip to the hardware store resolved that.

I am real happy with the selection made and once the mattress set arrived, it fit great, and I saved a lot of money and stress versus purchasing this at a bedding store.
