TechMatte MagGrip Car CD Player Magnetic Mount

We have recently become fans of magnetic mounts so it’s no surprise that I gravitated towards the TechMatte MagGrip CD Player Magnetic Mount when looking for a CD player smartphone mount.  Only recently did I become aware of TechMatte as a manufacturer of competitively priced mounts and posted our first review of one of their products, the TechMatte MagGrip Vent Mount and you can read that review here.

CD Player mounts are reasonably new versus traditional mounts like a suction cup or vent variety.  Turns out this is a good location for lightweight devices.  We wrote a detailed article on CD player mounts which you can read here.  I don’t know about you, but I can’t remember the last time I purchased a CD let alone played one in my car.  Using it for a mount is a good idea, especially if it doesn’t block your radio when in use (which can be a limitation with these mounts so make sure you have sufficient clearance).

The concept for the TechMatte MagGrip product line is pretty simple.  A metal plate is attached to the back of your device or inserted between a smartphone case and device.  That metal plate then sticks  to the mount which has a magnet at the end.  To use it, simply hold the metal part to the magnet.  No cradles involved.

The TechMatte MagGrip mount has three components in the box.  The mount and two metal surfaces which are used to attach to the mount.  Like other mounts in the MagGrip line, this mounting surface is available in black, red and blue which is unusual as most mounts are available in one color which is black.  The part that you insert into the CD player, which is mostly unseen, is black in all color varieties.

Installation of the mount into the CD slot is fairly easy.  Insert the fins of the mount into the CD player.  The fins aren’t going to insert too deeply.  Secure it in place by turning the flywheel at the bottom of the mount.

Two metal attachments are provided with this mount.  Your typical round metal plate about the size of the magnetic surface of the mount with an adhesive backing can be stuck to the back of your device.  As long as you don’t mind sticking something to the back of your device, this should work well and if you are not using a case or skin, this is the only option available.  A rectangular metal plate a little larger than the round disk is also included.  This rectangular plate does not have adhesive and is intended to be used by those that have a case or skin.  The instructions indicate this should be used with cases.  Simply place this plate between your case and the phone and close it back up.  The magnet is strong enough to hold your device through the case.  I tried this method using an Otterbox Defender case and it worked real well for my iPhone 5s.

This is marketed for smartphones although I would think the magnet is strong enough to be used with a GPS as well.  According to TechMatte, this mount should work with most phones, although they do state that the metal plate/sticker may affect wireless charging for some devices.  In the case of my iPhone 5s, there weren’t any issues, but I can see it being a potential issue when using magnetic charging attachments.

The TechMatte MagGrip CD Player Magnetic Mount is a well priced option for CD player mounting.  While I wouldn’t use it for a tablet, it should work well for small lightweight devices.
