The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is a nice entry in the arena of higher end smartphones for Android fans. A little bump in the RAM to 4 GB versus the 3 GB on the standard Sony Xperia XZ makes this phone worth a look. The extra 33% boost in RAM makes a big difference in performance.
The features a respectable 5.46 inch 3840 x 2160 pixel diagonal display. The main camera checks in with a semi insane 19 MP lens. Measuring 6.14 x 3.03 x 0.31 inches, this is a larger phone that will need a mount that features a cradle large enough to accommodate the larger size. Add a case to this phone, and it makes it even larger. Be sure to take a measurement of the final phone configuration before heading out to get a mount.
A well made case will pay for itself many times. A single drop on ceramic tile that results in a broken display can cost a few hundred dollars to fix. If you think insurance will cover you, think again. Insurance policies purchased from your carrier carry a deductible and for newer more expensive phones that can be $169 on up. So to add insult to injury, you will not only be paying a monthly insurance premium, but you then pay the deductible. You can read our article on phone insurance here.
Moving on to the Sony Xperia XZ Premium mount discussion. The large display and higher end processor and memory pairs nicely with an app like Waze which continues to be one of our favorites.
We will be sure to recommend mounts with cradles that open wide enough to fit this phone with or without a case.
For the car, look around to see where a mount would fit best. There are lots of choices available for your Sony Xperia XZ Premium. It’s going to depend upon your particular car and preferences.
Let’s start with the air vent. This is a great location because it keeps it away from plain site and is near eye level view. The center vents are likely the best location. The Square Jellyfish Jelly-Grip Car Air Vent Mount is one that we have been recommending lately.
The Square Jellyfish Jelly-Grip mount can be used to hold the Sony Xperia XZ Premium with or without a case or skin. Utilizing a ball and socket, the cradle can swivel into portrait or landscape orientation. This mount will work on flat vent slats that are 3/8 to 1 inch deep. The included cradle opens to 3 5/8 inches which is large enough for the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. It’s also worth mentioning the size of the ball is the same found on the back of a Garmin GPS cradle. To use this for a Garmin GPS, simply remove the cradle.
While the windshield is a go-to place for many, some states don’t allow that location so be sure to check and make sure this location is a green light for your location. A few of those states are discussed in this article.
If you’re good with the windshield, consider the Arkon Ultra Slim Grip Suction Mount. This mount has an expandable cradle that expands to almost 7 inches when using the longest set of legs. That’s more than large enough for the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. The phone will be held from the top and bottom. The mount comes with an adhesive dash plate so that you can attach to the mount to your dash as well as your windshield. The phone can rotate 360 degrees into portrait or landscape.
The Mpow CD Slot Mount for SmartPhones uses a knob on the bottom to secure the mount within the CD player. That’s the one in the photo that accompanies this article. I prefer this mount to others in this category as it will permit a more custom and secure fitting. You don’t want the mount to rattle around inside the player. The cradle opens to 3.4 inches which is wide enough for most phones and many GPS devices. The mount has a 17mm ball so you can remove the cradle and just use it for a Garmin GPS.
The fingerprint scanner is integrated into the power button found on the side of the phone. Brilliant. Anywhere but the back is brilliant to us. Placing the fingerprint button on the side opens us up to practically any mount for a motorcycle. Just be sure the expandable cradle doesn’t interfere with the side buttons.
A good mount to consider is the TechGripper Handlebar Mount Kit. This mounting kit combines a handlebar attachment with a holder which opens to 4 inches. The mount is metal and coated in black. It fits handlebar diameters from 7/8 to 1.25 inches and will fit the majority of motorcycle models that can accommodate a handlebar mount. The mount takes up .75 inches of handlebar real estate and the phone sits somewhat close to the handlebar. A small hex wrench is provided for installation. This is a nice feature that helps prevent theft of the mount since most thieves aren’t usually walking around with a set of hex wrenches. We always recommend tethering your device for added security.
