External Antennas for your GPS

External antennas have been available for GPS units for a long time.  Ten years ago, it was a good addition to your GPS because the external antenna had a higher gain than the one internal to your GPS.  I remember using my old Garmin Streetpilot 2720 and needed to add an antenna to it because that silly little hockey stick shaped stub was not strong enough to pull in the satellites.  Over the years that has changed and people now use external antennas because they would like to keep the GPS where it cannot see the sky.  For instance, there are people … Read more

Car Dashboard Mounts

The car dash is a good place to mount a GPS, smartphone, radar detector, camera or small tablet.  In some cases, it’s the only option you may have.  In a prior article, we discussed a few states where mounting anything to your windshield is illegal leaving your dash the only logical place to mount a device that needs to see what is in front of you (for example a camera or radar detector).   The dashboard is a good place to mount anything that needs to remain near your line of site while driving. The key components of a good dash … Read more

Caddie Buddy Golf Cart Mount for Garmin Approach G6 G7 and G8

The Caddie Buddy Golf Cart Mount for the latest Garmin Approach golf GPS units is one of the few I have seen specifically targeted to this line.  Sure, Garmin has their Garmin Universal Mount for Approach G6 G7 G8, but it has its challenges in attachment and stability in that the GPS doesn’t hold too well to the mount.  Let’s take a closer look at the Caddie Buddy mount and how it differs from the Garmin entry. Garmin Nuvi Mounts for Stuff Other than a GPS

With the mainstream use of SmartPhones for GPS use, there’s a lot of unloved mounts out there.  Apps such as Waze have been mentioned on this site  and it’s free to use for a GPS experience that you may find superior to your Garmin.  Therefore, why not re-purpose those Garmin Nuvi mounts? So I’m guessing that you are reading this because you have one of those excellent Garmin bean bag mounts known as the Garmin 010-10908-00 in official number speak.  Garmin makes some good heavy duty mounts (we aren’t fans of the suction cups that come packaged with the GPS … Read more

Garmin GLO GPS and GLONASS Receiver Car and Aviation Mounts

The Garmin GLO is a portable device that receives GPS as well as GLONASS signals.  For those unfamiliar with those terms, GLONASS is the Russian version of GPS.  Same concept but different satellites.  This portable unit receives both sets of satellites.  The Garmin GLO comes in a car and aviation model.  Both models transmit information to a mobile device using Bluetooth. Mounts for the Garmin GLO series are somewhat limited.  There isn’t any display on a Garmin GLO, it’s just a black box with a status light that tells you if it’s on, off or about to run out of battery … Read more

Garmin Portable Friction Car Mount Product Review

The Garmin Portable Friction Car Mount was introduced roughly 5 years ago.  The part number for this mount is 010-11280-02.  You will also see some older models listed as part number 010-11280-00.  This mount is made to be compatible with all Garmin Nuvi GPS models.  The mount requires the cradle that came with your GPS.  That cradle is likely still attached to your suction cup mount.  Removal of the cradle is a simple matter of pulling it off the suction mount.  Like the suction mount, the Garmin Portable Friction Mount has a 17mm ball which is standard to all Garmin Nuvi … Read more
