The dimensions of the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 have not changed too much over the past few years. If you have a mount from a previous generation of Note, there is a good chance it will fit the Samsung Galaxy Note7. Same large 5.7″ Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen supporting 16M colors using Gorilla Glass 5.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has some great features. However, a not so great feature is overheating. Be sure to get this addressed prior to use. Detail can be found at the Samsung Recall Page.
This phone measures 6.04 x 2.91 x 0.31 inches (153.5 x 73.9 x 7.9 mm). These are important measurements to keep in mind when selecting your mount. For those that have purchased a universal mount to hold your older phone, hopefully it opens wide enough to hold your new device without a problem. Most universal mounts offer options to upgrade your cradle to a larger one. Be very aware of the size of any cradle, this is a very large phone that may not fit in many cradles. A lot of older cradles only open to 3″ so if you have a case or skin, it’s time for a new mount.
Get a case. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is a very expensive device. I have always liked the Otterbox Defender series which we reviewed here, but there are lots of others. Invest about $25 or so. A single drop on ceramic tile that results in a broken lens will cost way more than the case. If you think insurance will cover you, think again. Insurance policies purchased from your carrier have a deductible and for newer more expensive phones that can be $169 on up. So to add insult to injury, you will not only be paying the monthly insurance premium, but you will then pay the deductible. You can read our article on phone insurance here. Like I said, get a case.
Moving to the mount discussion. We’re going to use mounts with expandable cradles that will be large enough to hold the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 with or without a case or skin (the mounts will fit both configurations).
The windshield is the most popular location to mount especially if you plan to use it as a GPS. I love Waze for this purpose and it will work real well on the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. A well made expandable mount that I have used for my phone is the Arkon Slim Grip Ultra Suction Cup Car Mount. This mount features an expandable cradle which expands to over 7 inches using a spring-loaded top and bottom. The support arms move so that you can expose any ports or buttons. This will fit the Samsung Galaxy Note7 with or without a thick case. The mount comes with an adhesive dash plate so that you can attach to the mount to your dash as well as your windshield. The phone can swivel into landscape or portrait mode although I find that I typically use this mount in landscape 90% of the time. The manufacturer provides a 2-year warranty.
This same company also makes the very functional Arkon Slim Grip Ultra Smartphone Car Cup Holder Mount. Like the previously discussed mount, this also uses the same expandable cradle that opens to 7 inches and holds the OnePlus 3 from the top and bottom. There is a 5 inch flexible stem which is used to get the best angle. The base expands to fit almost any cup holder. Your phone can swivel into portrait or landscape mode. The manufacturer provides a 2-year warranty on these mounts.
Another good smartphone location is the car air vent. The Arkon Magnetic Vent Mount is an excellent option for a Samsung Galaxy Note 7. That’s the mount in the photo that accompanies this article. The mount secures onto horizontal or vertical car air vents with an added support leg for extra stability. The added support leg is unique to the Arkon mount. It enables additional stability over other vent mounts. The vent location keeps your phone right around eye level and out of the way of potential thieves. Check your vent to make sure it’s well made enough to hang a lightweight device. Like most magnetic mounts, the Arkon entry makes use of a small magnet coupled with a very thin adhesive metal disk which sticks to the back of your phone or case. Easy to use. It’s a simple matter of placing your phone next to the mount and let it stick.
Most motorcycles can use the RAM X-Grip IV Handlebar Mount. These mounts feature the expandable X-Grip IV cradle which opens to 4.5 inches. This is large enough for a Samsung Galaxy Note 7 with or without a case or skin. For motorcycle use, it’s important that you select a mount that has a well constructed cradle that is going to hold your Samsung Galaxy Note 7 very tightly so that it stays put through the vibration of a ride. We have recommended this particular mount for several years as they are great mounts. These are heavy-duty mounts that are mostly constructed of metal and feature a lifetime warranty. The mount has gone through some rigorous shake tests and holds up well on a motorcycle. We wrote about X-Grips extensively on this site and you can view that article here. A tether is included with this mount. Be sure to use for added safety.
